Get connected with local 3/50 project businesses

Recently I learned about the 3/50 Project and some of the local businesses in my community who are participating. The 3/50 Project has a simple concept. Each month pick 3 local businesses and spend a total of $50 in those 3 businesses. It's that simple!

The businesses that I found participating are Green in the Blue Ridge, Celtic Tides and Blue Collar Joe's. I LOVE all three businesses so it isn't really any chore for me to support them. What I did find interesting is that neighboring businesses and customers didn't even know about the program!

There are economic reasons to support 3/50 Project businesses. Out of every $100 spent in local businesses, $68 returns to the community, through taxes, payroll and other expenditures, as stated on the 3/50 Project website. The more compelling reason is that locally owned, small businesses are the backbone of communities, what makes each community unique, and reflects the values and flavor of the people who live there. If that uniqueness is lost, what makes any one place different from the next?

So my personal Green Goal for this summer travel season is to find 3/50 Project businesses wherever I go. I plan to support them by shopping there, review them on local search services and tell other people directly about the businesses I find. It's my small action to supporting local economies.
